Buzz propels 25 to Life sales

When the video game called 25 To Life came out in January, the critics agreed: It stunk.

They called the graphics sloppy, the plot confusing and the controls awkward.

But 25 To Life rocketed up the charts anyway. Many local video game stores can't keep it in stock. The reason: a controversial storyline that lets people play as gang members who take hostages and kill cops.

Sony's PSP: Pretty Sweet Price?

Sony may have delayed the debut of its PlayStation 3 juggernaut, but that doesn't mean the electronics giant has no aces up its sleeve.

That's the great thing about having major franchises in not just one but two arenas. Sony may essentially lead the console market, but it also has a palpable presence on Nintendo's turf -- I'm talking about the PSP handheld wonder, of course. And now, Sony has upped the game concerning that platform.

Dell to buy Alienware

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Dell Inc. said on Wednesday it agreed to buy gaming-computer maker Alienware Corp., part of a push into the lucrative computer gaming market that could help the No. 1 PC maker boost profit.

Terms of the transaction weren't disclosed. Privately held Alienware, based in Miami, will operate as a separate unit and keep its product development, marketing, sales and technical support staff as well as its brand, Dell said in a statement.

Sony to debut online service with PlayStation 3

SAN JOSE, California (Reuters) - Sony Corp.'s top video game studio executive said on Wednesday that a new online service debuting with its PlayStation 3 console in early November will open up a world of new content for gamers as well as new revenue opportunities for the company.

The service, which lets users buy games and communicate and compete with other players via the Web, again puts the company in head-to-head competition with Microsoft Corp.

Gamestop profits up, shares rise

NEW YORK (Reuters) - GameStop Corp., the biggest U.S. video game retailer, on Tuesday reported its profit more than doubled in the first full quarter since it acquired Electronics Boutique stores, topping Wall Street estimates as its operating margins improved.

The company also forecast its comparable-store sales would rise by 6 percent to 9 percent in the current fiscal year, driven by expected launches of Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Revolution in November.

China forces online gamers to unmask

BEIJING (AFP) - Chinese gamers who frequently adopt flamboyant alter egos for their online contests will soon be forced to reveal their true identities in a bid to stop youngsters from spending too much time in the virtual world.

Beginning in June, all Chinese Internet game manufacturers will be required to install technology in their games that demands players reveal their real name and identification number, the Xinhua news agency said Tuesday.

Microsoft to boost Xbox 360 availability this week
